Treatments for dynamic wrinkles
Neuromodulators in Millburn, NJ
When first introduced a decade ago, Botox Cosmetic® revolutionized the way dermatologists can affect the signs of aging. Botox has since become a household name, although other effective neuromodulators have become available as well.
Neuromodulators offer a safe, effective, non-invasive option to reduce the signs of aging, such as fine lines, deep creases, and more. If you’ve been considering Botox, you might be impressed with its many benefits.
The highly-skilled, board-certified dermatologists at Millburn Laser Center in Millburn, New Jersey, can help you explore your options for rejuvenating your appearance with neuromodulators.
What are Neuromodulators?
The most well-known neuromodulator, Botox, is the brand name for a drug derived from the Clostridium bacterium. Botox and other neuromodulators inhibit nerve-muscle communication.
Because the injected muscle is unable to contract, wrinkles soften and relax. Neuromodulators are used to improve the appearance of dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions.
What can neuromodulators treat?
Neuromodulators effectively treat the following symptoms of aging:
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines
- Crow’s feet
- Bunny lines
- Lines around the lips
- Marionette lines
- Neck wrinkles
Additionally, neuromodulators can create the effect of a brow lift and slim the jawline. They can also treat excessive sweating of the armpits, palms, and soles of the feet.
Neuromodulators We Offer in Millburn
Botulinum type A injections are the most frequently performed cosmetic procedure in the United States. While Botox is the most commonly used neuromodulator in anti-wrinkle injections, other effective products include:
- Dysport®
- Jeuveau®
- Xeomin®
- Daxxify®
Each of these products contains the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A. The primary difference is in the formulation, which affects the dosage administered, how the product spreads in the injected site, and how quickly a patient sees results.
Based on your facial anatomy and goals, the expert dermatologists at Millburn Laser Center can recommend the wrinkle treatment that’s best for you.
The Neuromodulator Procedure
1
Before treatment, the injection sites will be cleansed with a non-alcohol cleanser.
2
An ultra-fine needle is used to inject the neuromodulator into specific muscles.
3
Most patients experience only minor discomfort, while others report a slight stinging sensation or pressure.
4
Depending on the neuromodulator used and the severity of the lines being treated, 3-5 injections per muscle are usually administered.
Your dermatologist will customize your treatment according to your needs and goals.
The procedure takes approximately ten minutes to complete and about seven days to take full effect. For 24 hours after treatment, patients are advised not to rub or massage the treated areas to prevent the product from spreading to other areas. Because the procedure requires minimal downtime, patients can resume their normal activities immediately.
Your aesthetic goals will determine the number of sessions you’ll need. Most patients only require one session every 3-4 months to attain their desired results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are neuromodulators safe?
A: Yes. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Botox in 2002 as a temporary aesthetic treatment for moderate to severe frown lines. When dosage and frequency are considered, neuromodulators have proven successful when performed by an experienced injector, such as our aesthetic experts at Millburn Laser Center.
The FDA has also approved the other neuromodulators used in our dermatology center: Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau.
Q: Do the injections hurt?
A: The ultra-fine needles used by our board-certified dermatologists ensure that there is little to no discomfort. If desired, a topical numbing cream can be applied.
Q: How soon will I see results?
A: You may notice results within 24-48 hours, but it can take up to two weeks for final results to be visible.
Q: How long can my results last?
A: The effects of neuromodulator treatment last between 3-5 months, and you can maintain your results with another treatment when the results begin to wear off. With repeated treatments, neuromodulators help keep fine lines and wrinkles from worsening and may even prevent new wrinkles from forming.
Q: Is there downtime after the procedure?
A: No downtime is needed—you may return to your normal activities immediately after treatment.
Q: Are there side effects?
A: Side effects are uncommon, but some patients may experience slight discomfort, bruising, swelling, or headaches for 2-3 days after treatment.
Q: Who should not get neuromodulators?
A: You shouldn’t use neuromodulators if you have:
- An allergy to ingredients in Botox or similar products
- A skin infection or other condition in the injection area
- ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, or another illness that affects your muscles or nerves
- Difficulty swallowing
- Bleeding issues
- Weakness in your forehead muscles
- Drooping eyelids
Q: What precautions should I take after a dermal filler treatment?
A: It is recommended not to do strenuous activities for 24 hours to avoid inadvertently moving the filler to another location. And until the redness and swelling have been resolved, avoid hot or freezing temperatures by refraining from exposure to the sun (always wear sunscreen), saunas, hot wax, and hot tubs, as well as cold activities such as skiing.
Q: How are neuromodulators different from dermal fillers?
A: Neuromodulators relax the muscles that cause wrinkles, whereas dermal fillers physically fill in lines and wrinkles, hollows, and other volume-deficient areas of the face. The results of fillers are immediately visible, whereas Botox can take several days to take effect.
Dermal fillers can be used alone or in combination with Botox to achieve a non-surgical facelift.
Dermal filler injections help fill and smooth lines, wrinkles, and deep folds found around the eyes, forehead, cheeks, lips, temples, chin, jowls, and jawline.
Q: Can neuromodulators be reversed?
A: There’s no fast way to dissolve or reverse neuromodulators. Their effects will wear off after about 3-5 months. To avoid complications or poor results, seek neuromodulator treatment from a medical professional who understands facial anatomy and can expertly tailor your treatment to your unique needs.
Q: Can neuromodulators be combined with laser treatments?
A: Yes, you can receive Botox injections following laser treatment. And the same is true for laser treatments performed following Botox.
However, you should wait approximately two weeks between laser skin treatments and Botox injections, regardless of the order in which they are performed. This interval allows your skin to heal between treatments and prevents Botox from spreading, ensuring the best possible outcome.
